Dabei werden forschungspraktische Aspekte genauso diskutiert wie Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Generalisierbarkeit oder die Rolle der gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen und der eigenen Standortgebundenheit im Forschungsprozess.

Abstract

The book focuses on the state of education and on the levels of inequality among gender, rural–urban and social groups. Taking into account the various findings from existing literature on the qualitative and quantitative aspects of education, it uses empirical findings based on a revised methodology to draw new conclusions. This revised method was devised to define the size of population eligible for enrollment and was then employed to estimate the Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) and Gross Literacy Rate (GLR) at various completed education levels, using age-wise data from the Population Census, 2011. This methodology is based on the concept that among those eligible for enrollment/literacy, a few never get chance to enrol and others achieve various levels of literacy by remaining engaged in formal or informal education up to various ages. The book comes up with findings that have deep significance so far as policy making is concerned towards improving the state of education in India. There are fourteen hypotheses that the book proposes based on the study and each hypothesis is accompanied with policy suggestions. Interestingly, one of the hypotheses is that arbitrariness of government policies creates more problems and, as such, before proposing a policy change the government needs to put in more effort and time in planning and come up with carefully chalked out processes. In addition to being a valuable resource for researchers working in this area, the book has huge policy implications and think tanks working towards improving education in India.

Abstract

This handbook marks the transformation of the topic of literacy from the narrower concerns with learning to read and write to an interdisciplinary enquiry into the various roles of writing and reading in the full range of social and psychological functions in both modern and developing societies. It does so by exploring the nature and development of writing systems, the relations between speech and writing, the history of the social uses of writing, the evolution of conventions of reading, the social and developmental dimensions of acquiring literate competencies, and, more generally, the conceptual and cognitive dimensions of literacy as a set of social practices. Kan vi arbeide med metodar i skulen utan å trekkje inn innhald og mål? Kva kan digital teknologi gje av pedagogisk meirverdi? Kan tysk danningsteori framleis vere til hjelp til å forstå undervisning og læring? Denne boka handlar om det som skjer når danningsteori møter utfordringane med digital teknologi i skulen og særleg med bruken av mobile einingar (m-læring) i lærarutdanninga. Undervisningstema som er drøfta, er filosofi og etikk, engelsk litteratur og kunst og handverk. Sentrale perspektiv er henta frå den tyske teoretikaren Wolfgang Klafki (1927–2016). Klafkis kategoriale danningsteori blir kritisk drøfta i lys av dagens digitale utfordringar, og mottakinga av teorien hans i norsk pedagogikk og didaktikk blir òg vurdert. Forfattarane argumenterer for at Klafki framleis er aktuell. Eit sentralt poeng for Klafki var at danning er tosidig; ho har alltid både ei formal og ei materiell side. Vi kan ikkje «lære å lære» utan å lære noko. Han peika også på at det konkrete emnet har ei generell side, ein kategori, av større eller mindre danningsverdi. For å kunne velje læringsstoff og metode, må læraren og læreplanmakaren må ha ein fagleg idé om kva dette kan vere.

Abstract

This book traces the changing conditions of literacy learning over the past century as they were felt in the lives of Americans born between 1895 and 1985. The book demonstrates what sharply rising standards for literacy have meant to successive generations of Americans and how they have responded to rapid changes in the meaning and methods of literacy learning in their society. Drawing on more than 80 life histories of Americans from all walks of life, the book addresses critical questions facing public education at the twenty-first century: What role does economic change play in creating inequality in access and reward for literacy? What is the human impact of the economy's growing reliance on the literacy skills of workers? This book gets beyond the usual laments about the crisis in literacy to offer an often surprising look into the ways that literacy is lived in America.
